DJI Avata 360 – Is It Actually Good Enough?

The DJI Avata 360 opens up a completely different style of drone filmmaking. It makes dynamic, FPV-style movement far more accessible – but is the image quality good enough to justify the trade-off?

Below, you’ll find all of our real-world tests, along with our quick verdict and key pros and cons.

Our Quick Verdict

The DJI Avata 360 is not a traditional camera drone, and that’s exactly the point. It allows you to create shots that would normally require far more skill, planning, or specialised flying. The trade-off is image quality. If your priority is pure resolution and the cleanest possible image, there are better options. But if your priority is movement, energy, and creating shots that feel fresh, it becomes a very interesting tool.

✅ What it does well
  • Makes complex, cinematic shots achievable in a single, simple flight
  • Reframing in post gives you full control over camera movement after the fact
  • Allows you to focus on flight path first, framing second – a completely different shooting approach
  • Can fly forward while effectively filming backwards, maintaining obstacle avoidance and confidence
  • Works well for solo creators – no need for a second operator or complex setup
  • Strong 10-bit colour performance holds up well for grading and creative work
  • Great tool for experimenting and pushing creative ideas quickly
❌ Where it falls short
  • Final reframed resolution can be limited (often closer to 1080p depending on crop)
  • Pushing reframing too far introduces softness and stitching artefacts
  • Not ideal if your priority is maximum sharpness or pixel-level detail
  • Requires time in post to get the most out of footage
  • Occasional stitching issues (e.g. jello or seam artefacts in certain conditions)
  • Less predictable results compared to traditional framing in-camera
  • Not a replacement for a dedicated high-end camera drone
✅ Who it’s for
  • Creators who prioritise movement, energy, and storytelling over pure image quality
  • Solo filmmakers who want to create complex shots without advanced FPV skills
  • Anyone interested in FPV-style footage without the learning curve or risk
  • Creators who enjoy shaping shots in post-production
  • Filmmakers looking to add new, unique shot types to their work
❌ Who it’s not for
  • Filmmakers who prioritise maximum image quality and clean 4K detail
  • Commercial work where consistency and predictability are critical
  • Shooters who prefer to frame everything perfectly in-camera
  • Anyone who doesn’t want to spend time refining shots in post

WHAT MAKES THE AVATA 360 DIFFERENT?

Most drones ask you to get the shot right in the air. The Avata 360 changes that. Because you can reframe the shot afterwards, you’re no longer locked into one camera angle or one exact move. That gives you much more creative freedom, and it also lowers the skill barrier for getting visually exciting footage.

That doesn’t mean there are no compromises. The trade-off is that resolution and image quality are not on the same level as a traditional camera-first drone. The Avata 360 works best when you understand what it is for: movement, energy, flexibility, and creative camera paths that would otherwise be difficult or impossible.

Is the DJI Avata 360 Worth It?

If you want the cleanest possible image, this probably isn’t the right drone to judge purely on specs. But if you care about movement, creativity, and getting shots that stand out, the Avata 360 becomes far more compelling.

For us, the value is not that it replaces a traditional camera drone. The value is that it gives you access to a different type of shot entirely.
