Concept
Movement doesn’t have to come from the camera. It can come from the subject or elements within the frame.
When something moves through the shot, it naturally draws the viewer’s eye and makes the scene feel more alive.
Watch the next trigger:
How to apply it
• Have your subject walk, drive, cycle etc. through the frame.
• Allow the subject to enter or exit the shot.
• Feel free to keep the camera static while action unfolds in the frame.
• Combine subject motion with camera motion for stronger impact.
• Track a moving subject to add energy to the shot.
MENTAL TRIGGER
“What in this shot can move?”

Sometimes when you’re out filming, your mind goes blank.
You know there are things you should be thinking about – composition, movement, lighting, storytelling – but in the moment it’s easy to forget. That’s exactly why we created this printable Creator’s Cheat Code.
Download the printable cheat code so you can use these ideas in the field. If a shot doesn’t contain at least one of these triggers, it’s a good sign it could be improved.
