Concept
Flat images feel lifeless. Cinematic shots feel three-dimensional.
You can achieve this by including foreground, midground and background elements in your frame.
Watch the next trigger:
How to apply it
• Look for ways to add layers to your frame by:
• Framing your subject through foreground objects (trees, rocks, fences, grass).
• Moving the camera past foreground elements to reveal the subject.
• Placing your subject in the midground while the environment extends into the background.
MENTAL TRIGGER
“What can I put between the camera and my subject?”

Sometimes when you’re out filming, your mind goes blank.
You know there are things you should be thinking about – composition, movement, lighting, storytelling – but in the moment it’s easy to forget. That’s exactly why we created this printable Creator’s Cheat Code.
Download the printable cheat code so you can use these ideas in the field. If a shot doesn’t contain at least one of these triggers, it’s a good sign it could be improved.
